We all know 2020 has been quite a roller coaster ride, and our travel plans for spring break and summer were cancelled. Many of us are still wanting a family vacation or get away but a little closer to home.
Wherever you live, you\’re probably within driving distance of a location that you haven\’t experienced before: a new town or beach, a mountain or lake recreation area, a state or national park, or maybe just hiking or exploring your local area. The Huckstep family and friends drove a few hours from their home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to hike Huron Peak.
Here\’s what they had to say:
Some might ask why one would want to get up at the crack of dawn, off-road over rough terrain, and carry packs up many miles of steep switchbacks all to summit a 14,000 ft peak. Well, this, my friends, is why:
The sun rising gently over the horizon lighting up the wildflowers with an orange glow
A herd of mountain goats grazing within arm’s reach
360-degree views of jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and lonely valleys
Sharing chocolate bars at the summit to celebrate
The silence of vast wilderness all around
No distractions other than the crunch of rocks underfoot and friendly conversation
Marmots and Picas chittering as they poke their noses up out of meadow hideaways
Burning muscles and sweaty brows

And last, but not least, the feeling that despite the craziness of the world at large, everything is right in this place. Yes, everything is good.

Special Guest Blogger: Amanda Huckstep
Although her vocation is in Pediatric Physical Therapy, Amanda Huckstep\’s self-professed dream job would be to work as a travel blogger while exploring the world. Being an Air Force wife has provided opportunity to find adventure in many states including Hawaii, California, and Colorado as well as exploring England and much of Europe in a recent assignment abroad.
When 2020 summer travel plans were ruined by the global pandemic, Amanda turned her focus to outdoor opportunities right out her backdoor. Climbing 14er\’s is just one way to experience the beauty of Colorado up close and personal. Colorado has 54 mountains with summits over 14,000 ft elevation. Amanda has climbed 13 of them and hopes to conquer at least 40 of them before her knees give out!
